Why prints are important – Orange Beach Family & Beach Photographer

I have been composing this blog entry for a long time. Anyone that knows me, knows that I am not the most eloquent writer. But I feel like I need to say this. I get at least one or two responses to pricing every week asking the same question – “I don’t see just a disc?” And they are right. They don’t see just a disc. I understand that we live in a digital world. I understand people WANT digital files. And I sell them. But it’s not the focus of my business. And why? It’s because you can’t hang a digital file on the wall in your home to be admired by everyone that visits. And I have heard too many people say they put the disc in the drawer and never printed any of the images. That makes me sad. Your grandchildren may not even be able to SEE the digital files. Remember 8 track tapes, film slides, floppy discs, and any other outdated technology? Who has a floppy disc drive on their computer right now? Do you have a VCR in your home to watch old home movies? What about a projector to watch your grandparents’ home movies? I don’t want my grandchildren to say “If only grandma and grandpa had printed these for us to see!”

Now, I know I am romanticizing this a little. Let’s face it, the quality of the prints from our grandparents/parents’ day aren’t that great. Digital files are a fabulous way to archive your prints. But a digital file will never, ever replace an actual photographic print in my book. And that is why I don’t sell just a disc and probably never will. I do offer a gift print disc that allows you to print your images up to an 8×12. I think this is a good compromise for me. You get your entire session (plus reference prints) along with web sized files for sharing online. So if archiving your session is your reason for wanting a disc, then this is a great way to do it! Then, you purchase wall art from me. I also do sell the entire session in high resolution format, but it comes with a piece of wall art, an image box, and reference prints. Again, because I believe in tangible products for my clients. I want you to have something to show from your session!

I hope this answers the question of why I don’t sell just a disc, and I hope that you will think about printing your images with your photographer – no matter who you choose!

And because a post without a picture is just silly – here is one from a beach session I did last week! Now, wouldn’t it be a shame if this never got printed?

  • Sophie - Such a great post, and I wholeheartedly agree. We also only sell digital along with heirloom quality prints or a keepsake album. We want to ensure that our clients have a keepsake product that they will treasure forever, since we personally know how busy parenthood can get. 🙂 Thanks for sharing this!!!!ReplyCancel

  • Norah - Great post. Just last night I was replying to an email, from a mother wanting to get their child’s images via email for them to print out them selves. I pondered a while before replying. I believe the way you word it is the perfect reply. Thank youReplyCancel
